Don’t You Care

Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

Mark 4:38

The disciples were in the boat along with Jesus when a storm arose. They were following Jesus. He said for them to get in the boat and they did. Then He apparently went to sleep.

And along comes the storm. Fierce wind and waves so big that the boat was filling up with water. The disciples woke up Jesus. But then, these disciples who had followed Him and seen Him perform miracles of healings and deliverances from demons because of His great compassion began to question His goodness.

“Don’t You care?!?!?” they said.

Ever been there? Ever had the storms of life rock your world and leave you feeling alone, abandoned, and questioning does really God care?

While we may not doubt that He is with us, like the disciples, we may question why doesn’t He do something? Does He really care?

Your storm may not be a boat in the wind and waves, it may be a diagnosis that has rocked your world, or a prodigal child that hasn’t returned home yet, or financial setbacks or the death of a loved one. Whatever the storm, just believing God is with you may not provide all the hope you need.

We need to settle the issue of God’s goodness in our hearts because our perception of Him will radically affect our openness to receive from Him and our willingness to wait on Him and not give in to doubting. We need to be able to silence the voice of the enemy who whispers to us “does God really care?” Our faith needs to remain stable during storms because we all know storms will come.

Father, forgive me for the times I have doubted Your goodness and for the times I have listened to the voice of the enemy and waivered in my faith. I know You are good and You are with me through whatever storm comes my way. Help me to keep my eyes on You and not on the waves and wind. I ask in Jesus’s name, amen.

I have compiled some Bible verses on the goodness of God. Not complete by any means, just a starting point. It is titled The Goodness of God if you need encouragement about His goodness.
