Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16 A little girl that I work with is incredibly shy. When she wants to ask me for something, she generally gets her big sister to do the asking for her. I encourage her to come to me herself but she will not. I have been kind to her. I have not done anything to cause her to be afraid to approach me and ask for what she wants – but still, she hesitates. I … Continue reading Free Access

Allow God to Help

Behold, the LORD’S hand is not so short    That it cannot save;         Nor is His ear so dull       That it cannot hear. Isaiah 59:1 His socks were covered in bark chips from the playground where he had walked with one shoe off. After a couple of minutes, he sat down and started rubbing the bark chips off his sock in an attempt to put his shoe back on. He is a toddler and was having little success, the bark chips were winning! I offered to help but he did not want my help. I knew this not because of his words but because he … Continue reading Allow God to Help

Receive His Mercy

The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23 January 2023 is off and running as I write this. I have heard so many people voice gratitude that 2022 is over and behind us. For me, it wasn’t that bad of a year. What I am grateful for however, is that God’s mercies never come to an end. I can’t close up the 2022 calendar and say, “well, that’s it, the end of God’s mercy”. I need to be reminded that God’s mercy … Continue reading Receive His Mercy

Especially Then

Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called children of God; and such we are. I John 3:1   I will never forget his smile. At least, I hope I never forget his smile. Or the words he spoke or the way he spoke them. Simple words, all he said was “especially then.”  He was ringing up my purchase at the hydroponic store and we got to talking about our kids. He has three. I have four. We talked about annoying behavior as well as not so annoying behavior. I made a … Continue reading Especially Then

Two Feathers

as far as the east is from the west,     so far has he removed our transgressions from us. Psalm 103:12 His name is Two Feathers. He has other names that he calls himself, names too ugly to print here and in the course of our 15 minute visit, I heard many repeated several times. I met him at Voodoo Donuts in downtown Portland. I had taken my son John and three of his friends to the neighborhood with small stacks of $2 bills and $1 bills. They were passing them out and when they were done, we stood in line … Continue reading Two Feathers

Oops! My Bad!

Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.  For the law of the Spirit of life [a]in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.  Romans 8:1-2 The ball went sailing over the fence, crossed the street and rolled through the back lot of Target before it came to a rest.  The kids had been playing soccer, the fence was the goal and someone just scored a point and everyone should have been excited, but they weren’t.  They thought they were in trouble because of the ball being across the street now and began looking … Continue reading Oops! Who’s Job Is It?

It wasn’t so long ago that you were mired in that old stagnant life of sin. You let the world, which doesn’t know the first thing about living, tell you how to live. You filled your lungs with polluted unbelief, and then exhaled disobedience. We all did it, all of us doing what we felt like doing, when we felt like doing it, all of us in the same boat. It’s a wonder God didn’t lose his temper and do away with the whole lot of us. Instead, immense in mercy and with an incredible love, he embraced us. He … Continue reading Who’s Job Is It?
