Anger Issues

God said, “What do you have to be angry about?” Jonah 4:4 Jonah could have made a list of the things he was angry about.  He was a prophet and being asked to do the unthinkable – take God’s grace to the Israelites worst enemy. He was angry that the Ninevites might repent and God would spare them the judgment they had coming. They were ugly, vicious enemies of the Israelites. They were cruel and apparently boasted of their cruelty on their monuments, some of these monuments exists today in museums and here is a partial list of things they … Continue reading Anger Issues

Jesus Sees

“How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.” John 1:48 On my way to church tonight (yes, I go on Saturday nights!) I stopped at a convenience store for a bottle of water. There was a man sitting out front on the ground with a sign stating he was homeless and needed help. I went in and got my water and as I left, he asked for money. I approached the man and told him I had no money to give him. But I … Continue reading Jesus Sees

A Dangerous Read

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 “When Frederick Douglass’s master discovered that his wife, Mistress Sophie, was teaching this eight-year -old slave to read the Bible, he sternly forbade her to do so again. “If he learns to read the Bible it will ever unfit him to be a slave, he said, and in no time, “he’ll be running away with himself.” This, the renowned abolitionist Douglass later reflected, was the first antislavery lecture he had ever heard, and it inspired him … Continue reading A Dangerous Read

Allow God to Help

Behold, the LORD’S hand is not so short    That it cannot save;         Nor is His ear so dull       That it cannot hear. Isaiah 59:1 His socks were covered in bark chips from the playground where he had walked with one shoe off. After a couple of minutes, he sat down and started rubbing the bark chips off his sock in an attempt to put his shoe back on. He is a toddler and was having little success, the bark chips were winning! I offered to help but he did not want my help. I knew this not because of his words but because he … Continue reading Allow God to Help

Receive His Mercy

The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23 January 2023 is off and running as I write this. I have heard so many people voice gratitude that 2022 is over and behind us. For me, it wasn’t that bad of a year. What I am grateful for however, is that God’s mercies never come to an end. I can’t close up the 2022 calendar and say, “well, that’s it, the end of God’s mercy”. I need to be reminded that God’s mercy … Continue reading Receive His Mercy

Freebie

Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Mark 11:24 I placed a cart out on my front lawn near the sidewalk and taped a sign on it that read “FREE” and then waited. Fairly soon, a man pulled up and looked the cart over and under and then came and knocked on my door. He wanted to give me some money for it. I told him it was free. Turns out, he is a neighbor who does lawn work for a living. My front yard had been … Continue reading Freebie

God Will Supply

And this same God who takes of me will supply all your needs from His glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:19 God, who is the giver of every good and perfect gift, never stops giving.  He is aware of our needs even before we are.  What are your needs today?  Not your wants, your needs?  I tend to think that all I need is healing.  If I were healed everything would be just fine.  I need healing, I want healing, but only God knows my greatest point of need.  Only God can fully … Continue reading God Will Supply

Especially Then

Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called children of God; and such we are. I John 3:1   I will never forget his smile. At least, I hope I never forget his smile. Or the words he spoke or the way he spoke them. Simple words, all he said was “especially then.”  He was ringing up my purchase at the hydroponic store and we got to talking about our kids. He has three. I have four. We talked about annoying behavior as well as not so annoying behavior. I made a … Continue reading Especially Then

Two Feathers

as far as the east is from the west,     so far has he removed our transgressions from us. Psalm 103:12 His name is Two Feathers. He has other names that he calls himself, names too ugly to print here and in the course of our 15 minute visit, I heard many repeated several times. I met him at Voodoo Donuts in downtown Portland. I had taken my son John and three of his friends to the neighborhood with small stacks of $2 bills and $1 bills. They were passing them out and when they were done, we stood in line … Continue reading Two Feathers

Day Planner

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, but just because I can, doesn’t mean I should. Saying no is a healthy thing.  Saying no is also a relatively uncomfortable thing to do. So much emphasis is put on getting stuff done. Day planners promise fulfilled days if we can just get organized. Our lives will run so much better if we only learn to plan every minute, every hour of our day and check and double check to make sure we are on track. Ugh! I … Continue reading Day Planner
