Valentine’s Day

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Matthew 22:37-39  Happy Valentine’s Day! I read a couple of differing accounts of how this day came to be. I don’t know which is true, all I know about it is that I do like chocolate! I googled this and discovered that in the United States alone, 2.4 billion dollars is expected to be spent for Valentine’s Day this year! Further, 27.4 billion … Continue reading Valentine’s Day

52 Reasons Why

We love because He first loved us. I John 4:19 For Valentine’s Day at work, I helped a group of kids make a present for their mom or dad. We used old decks of cards and made a book called, 52 Reasons I Love You. Each of the 52 cards had a reason on it. It was a difficult project and several kids didn’t finish. But for the ones that did, it turned out to be a great gift for someone special. I made some also. I made one for my husband and one for each of my four children. It … Continue reading 52 Reasons Why

Setting Things Right

Jesus was going through all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness. Matthew 9:35 Jesus confused people. I think it’s safe to say as much. Everywhere He walked, He left behind people scratching their heads and wondering about this man who was the carpenter’s son. He came preaching a message quite different from what people anticipated, even those who were well versed in the writings of the Old Testament prophets. He healed the sick on the Sabbath, and He delivered people from the torment of Satan, … Continue reading Setting Things Right

Do Not Worry – No, Really Do Not Worry

Therefore, I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?  Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?  Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? Matthew 6:25-27 I could be a professional worrier. I used to have an odd believe that crept … Continue reading Do Not Worry – No, Really Do Not Worry

Good King, Bad King

I read the Bible for the first time in 1983. I was a brand new Christian and wanted to see what God had to say for Himself. I started at Genesis and read through to Revelation. It took about 3 months. When I closed the book I lay my head down and cried. I grew up in a Presbyterian Church. We went on Sunday mornings and almost every other time the doors were open. I remember a lot of things but I don’t remember learning anything about God. I am sure He was mentioned but I’m just saying, for me, … Continue reading Good King, Bad King

Two Feathers

as far as the east is from the west,     so far has he removed our transgressions from us. Psalm 103:12 His name is Two Feathers. He has other names that he calls himself, names too ugly to print here and in the course of our 15 minute visit, I heard many repeated several times. I met him at Voodoo Donuts in downtown Portland. I had taken my son John and three of his friends to the neighborhood with small stacks of $2 bills and $1 bills. They were passing them out and when they were done, we stood in line … Continue reading Two Feathers

No Favorites

Peter fairly exploded with his good news: “It’s God’s own truth, nothing could be plainer: God plays no favorites! It makes no difference who you are or where you’re from—if you want God and are ready to do as he says, the door is open. The Message he sent to the children of Israel – that through Jesus Christ everything is being put together again well, he’s doing it everywhere, among everyone. Acts 10:34 Good news is really hard to contain.  Peter fairly exploded (but Peter fairly exploded often!) with his good news. It is really good news – … Continue reading No Favorites

Really Jesus?! Children?!

The people brought children to Jesus, hoping he might touch them. The disciples shooed them off. But Jesus was irate and let them know it: “Don’t push these children away. Don’t ever get between them and me. These children are at the very center of life in the kingdom. Mark this: Unless you accept God’s kingdom in the simplicity of a child, you’ll never get in.” Then, gathering the children up in his arms, he laid his hands of blessing on them. Mark 10:14-15 Jesus was constantly surprising people by His word and His actions, even His disciples who had … Continue reading Really Jesus?! Children?!

Payment Accepted

So, friends, we can now—without hesitation— walk right up to God, into “the Holy Place.” Jesus has cleared the way by the blood of his sacrifice, acting as our priest before God. The “curtain” into God’s presence is his body.  So let’s do it—full of belief, confident that we’re presentable inside and out. Hebrews 10:19-22 Message Bible Need healing? Need restoration? Need peace? Need something you can’t even put into words? Feel like you can’t even approach God? You’ve been too distant – feel too unworthy – it’s been far too long since you even considered Him as a viable … Continue reading Payment Accepted
