A Balanced Equation

Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.  3 John 1:2 Years ago, I had to revisit algebra in an attempt to help our son with his school work.  One thing I learned is that equations need to be balanced.  For example 2 +5 = 10-3 is a balanced equation.  You probably remember from school that what you do to one side of that equation, you have to do to the other side to keep it balanced. An equation can be unbalanced otherwise. When I looked at this … Continue reading A Balanced Equation

The Wise Men

When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.  Matthew 1:10-11 This, of course, is referring to the story of the wise men coming to visit Jesus. We celebrated Christmas by telling the messages of advent for the weeks leading up to Christmas. Up to this point in the story of the coming of Jesus, the message was about the gifts Jesus brought into our lives – hope, … Continue reading The Wise Men

Mission Accomplished

As the rain and the snow    come down from heaven, and do not return to it    without watering the earthand making it bud and flourish,    so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,so is my word that goes out from my mouth:    It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire    and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. Isaiah 55:10-11 I promised a kid at work we would make Christmas ornaments out of Rice Krispies in time for Christmas. ‘Tis the season and guess who forgot that promise! She looked at me shocked and horrified when … Continue reading Mission Accomplished

Wide Receivers

How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not have it.  Luke 13:34 Jesus is speaking here to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, lamenting the fact that they would not receive Him.   This is hard to imagine and yet, too often, I am guilty of the same. I think that the inability to receive still keeps Jesus at arms lengths. A giver, no matter how unlimited his resources can only give what the receiver can and will take in.  Most children are good receivers. Offer children a … Continue reading Wide Receivers

God’s Economy

Years ago, when I lived in Montana, I had a wonderful gelding named Apache. The whole family loved that horse. Anyone could ride him; he was totally trustworthy. I especially liked taking him out on short jaunts in the woods. Fearless, smart and oh, how he loved to run, but there was one thing he would not do. He would not jump over anything. No, not ever, which most of the time was fine. But sometimes, in the woods, when a tree had fallen across the trail our ride would have been much nicer if he would have just jumped … Continue reading God’s Economy

Hope

“Behold,” he wrote, “a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel” Isaiah 7:14 A few days ago, we celebrated the first Sunday of Advent. Advent means arrival or coming and refers to the coming of Christ. The first candle lit on the advent wreath is the candle of hope. This past week as I was trying to come up with a way to explain hope that the children would understand (I teach Sunday School) I was coming up with little more than frustration. But then I saw hope that I could explain to them. … Continue reading Hope

The Cart Before the Horse

Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it,and it will be yours. Mark 11:24 If I had a dollar for every time I read this verse or heard teaching on it, I could take every one of you who reads this to Starbuck’s for a coffee! Don’t head out just yet … I said IF! But the other day, I got it. Call it revelation or an AH HA! moment, but I realized how my thinking had been wrong in this area. Oh, I believe that I am healed; that it is a done deal. … Continue reading The Cart Before the Horse

Never Shaken

My hope is in you, GodI am steadfast, I will not be movedI’m anchored, never shaken. All my hope is in you. William Matthews Hope. We sing the song “Hope’s Anthem” by William Matthews often at church. We are fast approaching the Christmas season where the word ‘hope’ is tossed around quite a bit. And yet, we also find that depression is more common during this season than others. So even though we talk about hope, some people don’t have much, if any. Due to pandemic issues, I will admit that this year as we head into Christmas, I am not overly hopeful. … Continue reading Never Shaken

Perfect Peace

You keep everyone in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because they place their trust in You. Isaiah 26:3 Perfect peace during a pandemic? Is this even possible? This verse (not the reality of my current experience) leads me to believe that it is possible. Which begs the question – how? I don’t know about you but I have had to turn off the news, stay away from Facebook and disengage from conversations around the hot topics. I don’t have answers and neither do the news reporters, the politicians and people who want to spend countless hours speculating … Continue reading Perfect Peace
