Toxic Words

Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper

and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.

3 John 1:2

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. Ever hear of that old saying?  I grew up with that . . . that and 5 siblings. We all knew the power of words to hurt. We used them against each other a lot. My parents never intervened in a fight unless it became physical. I guess they really believed that words don’t hurt. I learned to use words to fight and I fought well. It took years and years to unlearn that way of relating. Words do hurt, we all know that. Many of us have scars in our heart because of words spoken to us or over us.

When we hang on to these unkind words spoken to us, it is like allowing poison into our heart. That poison can spill over into all areas of our life, including our physical bodies. Holistic health practitioners tell us that healing involves looking at all aspects of our lives, not just the symptoms in our body. I think this is a crucial piece that is often missing in divine healing circles. God is interested in my whole person and in your whole person. Healing only our bodies may not be the complete healing He desires to take place in our lives.

What are the hurtful words you carry in your heart? Could this be time to let them go and allow God to heal you of the pain caused by them? How about having a funeral service for them? Print the words on slips of paper, put the paper in a fireplace or empty coffee can and burn them. Just let them go. Easier said than done, I know, but by God’s grace, it can be done. Then find new words to speak over yourself . . . words that bring healing and life. Be kind and compassionate to yourself and allow God to heal those scars in your heart. Let His healing be for your whole person.

Your soul is your mind, will, and emotions, and God is concerned about healing all of these as well as your physical body. He was, and still is today, a holistic healer.

Father, thank You that Your healing goes beyond just touching my body. Thank You for desiring to heal my whole person—my mind, my will, and my emotions, as well as my body.  Thank You for not only desiring that healing but for paying the price for it with the sacrifice of Your Son. Help me, I pray, to let go of the toxic words that have settled in my heart, so that my healing may flow unhindered, in Jesus’s name, amen.

I would love to hear from you. Please let me know if I can be praying for you as well.
