This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth;

but you shall meditate therein day and night,

that you may observe to do according to all that is written therein:

for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have

good success.

Joshua 1:8

 

Are you prospering right now? Do you have what you need in life for a successful journey? I am not talking about money here, although that could be part of it. I am talking about other things – wisdom, love, joy, contentment. What about your heart? Is it filled with hurt, anger, bitterness? What about your body? Does it function as it should, are you crippled by things that have come your way, does the doctor say this will just be part of your life now, accept it?

If you could describe your life in one word, would that word be prosperous? 

“The word prosper in the Hebrew text literally means “to push forward; to pass through; to get on.” It carries the idea of thriving and succeeding in what you do.”  Dr. Dan Hayden

If prosperous does not describe your life, maybe this verse has a prescription for you. 

I am reading a great book, The Slight Edge, by Jeff Olson. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has purposed to make changes in their life and found that it isn’t too long before the resolution fades away.

Jeff Olson says this, “The right choices and wrong choices you make at the moment will have little or no noticeable impact on how your day goes for you. Nor tomorrow, not the next day. No applause, no cheers, no screams, no life or death results played out in Technicolor. But it is precisely those very same, undramatic, seemingly insignificant actions that, when compounded over time, will dramatically affect how your life turns out.”

Reading the Bible today may not make a huge impact on your day, but reading daily, can, over time,  greatly impact your life.  Jeff Olson writes that this is the secret to success, daily making those simple decisions that are easy to make and equally easy to not make.

Seems the writer of Joshua is saying the same thing. Having what we need for a successful journey begins with one simple, seemingly insignificant decision – to read the Bible everyday and meditate on what was read and purpose to be obedient to what we have read. Simple to do right? Simple also not to do. The choice is ours. Our choice will greatly effect our future.

Father, forgive me for the times I have neglected Your word.  I get busy, I don’t understand it sometimes and it’s all to easy to skip one day.  But one day becomes two and so on.  Help me to have a renewed passion for Your word and a commitment to making time to spend in it.  Please help me to see Your heart in all that I read in Your word, I ask in Jesus’s name, amen.
